Barbados is known as "little England" the reason will become clear when you vist.  The British arrived in 1625 in the reign of James I.  The first settlement did not happen until two years later in 1627 when Captain John Powell landed in Holetown, formally Jamestown. The culture is very British, although over the years it has become more Americanised.

The Portugese, who landed here before the British. actually named the island  "Los Barbado" (the bearded one) from seeing the trees they saw upon arrival, Bearded Fig trees.

Barbados has the 3rd oldest Parliament in the world surpassed only by Great Britian and New Zealand.

The island is split into eleven parishes two of which have no shore line. The West Coast is on the Caribbean Sea, which makes for calm waters and safe for swimmers.  The East and South East has the Atlantic Ocean beating its shores. The Trade Winds make it an ideal place for surfing.

It is also one of the most popular tropical islands for weddings.  With most couples choosing the romantic setting of a marriage on the beach, a backdrop of the blue Caribbean Sea and warm white sand under foot. Lots of the island hotels have their own Wedding Organiser, who take away all the stress associated with organising a wedding.
